The main coke fired boiler at Haddon was replaced last year with a Windhager log fired system. This Austrian system supplies all hot water for the Hall (there is no central heating). This boiler burns half meter split logs, and is also enabled to work with solar. The Estate has approximately 600 acres of woodland, and a two man forestry team so in theory we have an indefinite supply of renewable heat. As a result of installing this system we have adjusted our forestry management to increase the amount of woodland coppicing we undertake. This is very good for the woods as it lets light onto the forest floor thereby allowing young trees to grow, and promotes vigorous growth from the trees that have been coppiced. If managed well, trees can be coppiced once every 10-15 years on a cyclical basis.
