Finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the Estate and work with Nature as much as possible to provide renewable power is a fundamentally important strategy for us. We have much to do but have started by installing a wood boiler at Haddon Hall and are building a micro hydro electric plant at Alport Mill which will power up to 35 houses.

The main coke fired boiler at Haddon was replaced last year with a Windhager log fired system. This Austrian system supplies all hot water for the Hall (there is no central heating).

Beginning this winter and to be completed by June 2009, the Estate is building a c.35KW hydro electric plant in the village of Alport. The entire plant will be buried underground beside an old mill, and will borrow water in a controlled way from the River Lathkill.
